The Ultimate Guide to Curly Hair Care
APART's Curley Hair Guide: Routines and Must-Have Products
One of our favorite things to do at APART is to help our clients embrace their natural curls. Clients often struggle to get their waves and curls to behave, resulting in frizz and inconsistent curl patterns. In reality, caring for curly hair isn't that difficult—it just requires a few specific steps. So let's get into it.
What is the best curly hair routine?
The best curly hair routine starts in the shower with a co-wash or suitable shampoo, followed by a leave-in conditioner applied to very wet hair before any curl-defining products. A good curly hair routine starts in the shower. Thicker hair should opt for a co-wash like Evo's Heads Will Roll which cleanses without stripping. If you have finer, oilier hair, Spring Clean is our go-to. It cleanses a bit deeper but still won't completely strip your hair.
Upon exiting the shower, it's important NOT to immediately wrap your hair in a towel. Instead, use an old T-shirt or microfiber towel to gently squeeze out excess water. Then, apply a leave-in product like Baby Got Bounce to moisturize. Gently detangle your hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb and apply a curl definer like Liquid Rollers or Total Recoil. You can also cocktail the two for optimal control.
It is important to apply curl products to VERY wet hair.
There are two golden rules for curly hair.
The two golden rules for curly hair are simple: brush your hair before shampooing (never after), and always apply curl products to very wet hair.

How to keep curls fresh between washes
To refresh your curls between washes, mist flattened areas with water, reapply a small amount of curl-defining product, and allow it to air dry.
How often should I wash my curly hair?
Wash your curly hair about once a week: this is the optimal frequency to prevent dryness while also warding off product buildup.
How to keep my curls from drying out?
To prevent your curls from drying out, swap your regular conditioner for a hair mask, seal in moisture with an oil or serum after your leave-in, and minimize heat.
1.
Use a mask instead of a conditioner. Mane Tamer is great for thick hair and The Great Hydrator is great for finer hair.
2.
Use an oil or serum AFTER your leave-in conditioner. We suggest Love Touch (fine hair) or Love Perpetua (thick hair). Oils and serums seal in moisture ;)
3.
Avoid heat. Blow drying and hot tools are the biggest culprits for stripping hair of moisture.
Embracing and caring for curly hair is about understanding its unique needs and using the right techniques and products. By following the routines and tips outlined in this guide, you'll be well on your way to achieving defined, frizz-free curls. Remember, consistency and practice are key.
